What is Healing?
Most people find it difficult to put into words what defines healing. I like to call it energy work, because that is essentially what we do when we work with a client. The practitioner, through training and experience, is able to tap into energies and channel them through to the client.
This energy work embraces a wide range of treatment methods, such as acupuncture, acupressure, shiatsu, Reiki, laying on of hands. All these treatment methods concentrate in the first instance on healing the body, knowing that a healthy body will lead to a healthy mind and spirit. The therapist helps a client to get their immune system to the point where the body can then heal itself.
Along with therapies which concentrate on healing the body, there are those that heal the mind. Healing the mind in turn leads to improvement in physical health, because we now do accept that body, mind and spirit are one and if any one of them is diseased the others will be affected. These treatment methods rest on the theory/belief that everything is energy in various states of density. Our bodies are energy, our thoughts are energy, matter is energy, and the universe is energy. Energy cannot be destroyed but can be changed through the influence of other energies. Even in counselling a client, feelings arise from thoughts, thoughts are energy, change your thoughts and you change your feelings.
There are times, if a client is extremely ill, when too much of the body may already have been destroyed and thought energy cannot restore it. However healing at that point can help the quality of life remaining.
The word Chakra is used often in energy work and this is a name to describe energy centres in the human body. The work Chakra comes from the Sanskrit word for wheel. Each Chakra has been described as a rotating wheel or revolving flower. The chakras are numerous and often only the seven major chakras are referred to which are, the root, the sacral, the solar plexus, the heart, the throat, the third eye and the crown.
The Root governs our reproductive organs and sexual vitality. It is also our grounding energy - keeping our feet firmly on the ground and our mind focused on physical and creative matters.
The Sacral governs our lower intestines and digestive systems. It also controls our relationships and social interactions with others. Its basis is in emotions, sexuality and desire.
The Solar Plexus governs our stomach and liver area. It is the root of our emotional balance, personal power and metabolic energy.
The Heart is in the centre of the chest and is responsible for circulatory and respiratory systems. It is our love centre, controlling feelings, relations and compassion.
The Throat governs our thymus and thyroid glands. This encourages communication and creativity.
The Third Eye is centred above the eyebrows. This is known as the psychic energy centre and is highly active in mediums. It governs the senses and our intuition.
The Crown is at the very top of the head. This governs our head and nervous system. This is our spiritual gateway and higher self.
Energy workers also often talk about the Aura. This is a multi-layered sphere of energy emanating from the body. It acts like a protective layer that filters out many harmful energies and draws in others that are needed.
Conventional medicine still displays a certain amount of skepticism towards energy work. Often scientific proof is sought. If a person is healed by a practitioner of energy medicine it is put down to the placebo effect or simply to faith.
But faith is thought, thought is energy, energy can be changed through the influence of other energy, so faith can heal. If the intention to heal and to be healed is there, healing will take place.
